Web Of Oakland
This regenerative community art piece acts as living, collaborative narrative architecture — unifying human capability, tangible reality, and physical presence — designed for collective integration within the rhythm of everyday life.
It is an active process of relational weaving for members of the community, local organizations and businesses.
It is the site of a regeneratve story being intentionally woven, envisioning the best possible futures for Oakland.
It is also a permanent memorial honoring the past, centering the life of Nia Wilson, who's tragic death at MacArthur station sparked international conversations addressing racial violence.
Through visualizing our vibrant community's often unseen connections, intentionally weaving new pathways, honoring our roots and the memory of those who came before us, and collectively imagining our brightest futures, we design the path toward the Oakland we know is possible.

The physical installation will be a ceiling mural of a web with a QR code in it, that is scannable and digitally brings the viewer to an AR (augmented reality) version of this giant glowing web that they can walk around and interact with on-site with their mobile device.
Long-term visions include physically adding solar-powered infrastructure on-site for a projected, illuminated version of the digital art piece.
Principles

Design Justice
The people who are most impacted by design decisions in our systems tend to have the least influence on how those decisions are made.
Design justice centers the people who are normally marginalized by design. This art piece intentionally centers the voices of our community that have been historically underrepresented.
Imagination
What is built must be imagined first. Many of the systems we live within were first imagined by people born long before us.
Imagination is a critical tool in redesigning our world so that it works for all of life. It is a skill that is innate within every human, and can be intentionally cultivated.
Future Backcasting
Future backcasting is a reverse-engineering method that sets a target future outcome and designs pathways to it. Rather than only focusing on incremental visions for change, it creates a broader view route toward ideal, specific, intentional future outcomes.
Process Based
Our brains constantly absorb sensory information, most of it below our conscious awareness. Inputs shape our thoughts and actions. When we intentionally seed our environments with art that reflects our shared vision and values, we influence those subconscious patterns—expanding our capacity to imagine, embody, and sustain the future we want to create.
